Step 1: Preparing the Soil
Healthy garlic starts with the right soil. First, test your soil’s pH level, aiming for a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Garlic thrives in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil, so choosing a sunny spot is key; garlic needs about six hours of sunlight daily.
To ensure your soil is loose enough, use a fork or tiller to break it up. Compacted soil can limit root growth, and loosening it will allow garlic to expand and develop well. Drainage is also important—good soil drainage helps prevent rot and diseases.
Step 2: Adding Nutrients
Garlic loves nutrient-dense soil, so adding compost is a great way to start. Compost provides key nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, all essential for garlic. Spread a layer of compost over the soil, and then work it in well. This will set the stage for strong, flavorful garlic bulbs.
